Oil and cold wax – a new medium to me

I’ve thought about trying this medium for quite a while.  It seems like a good bridge between the acrylics I use and oils – which I also think about.

I decided to book onto a workshop, I know this is a good way for me to learn -  to immerse myself in it.  I booked a one day workshop with the artist Lisa Tank at Indigo Crow Gallery in Lincoln.

Straight away I loved it, the texture is gorgeous to work with, it feels like you’re icing a cake.  You can work it on top of acrylics and quickly build depth and interest.

Then I focused on playing and learning in my own studio, working on paper with a limited palette.  I found I really enjoyed mixing my colours, it feels different to the process in acrylics, using my palette knife to cut and mix colours is very meditative.

I was working freely but with an eye on details and lines from my drawings.  What developed were landscapes that were rich, atmospheric with interesting and striking colour palettes.

I’ve had 3 of the paintings framed, mounting the paper onto board and finished in a simple off white frame.  All three sold on their first outing.  I’m looking forward to exploring more.
