The one that didn’t make the cut…..

Over the Summer I have been working on three new paintings, I had two events planned and I wanted to have some big statement pieces. Two of them arrived at their final destination, the composition coming together quite quickly. The third one…. not so much. Along the way there have been parts that I really liked but not the whole, too realistic, too much of a horizon line. I’ve had fun with it, there is video evidence of this on my social media. I have totally changed it and gone in different directions, a few times. But I felt it pulling me back all the time. I know I have gone back to it when I probably should have let it rest, easily done when you are working of lots of different pieces, not so easy if there’s only a few and only one is niggling you! Something to remember, I need to have lots on the go, always. The deadline of finishing it for an exhibition, the voice in my head saying “get this done,” probably didn’t help.

I am looking forward to getting back to it, maybe this will be the one to pull me in a slightly different direction. It doesn’t have the strength of colour I would like at the moment or the focal point to pull the composition together, but I do really like the application of paint, the layering of colour and the marks. I think I will try short bursts of time on it, maybe using a timer, and leaving it to do something else. When I don’t feel it needs anything else then I know it’s done.
